Arthur John Orton, The Crown Inn, Castle Street, Hinckley, Leicestershire.

The original “Crowne” dated back to at least 1670, when it was kept by Robert Bloor. In 1848-55, the Crown was kept by John Blakesley, sometimes shown as Blakersley, who was also a maltster.

Between 1870-75 the Crown was run by William Mason, also operating as a wine and spirit merchant.

In 1877, Arthur Orton was listed as brewing at the Crown and also shown as a vet. In 1884-6, he was running the Blue Bell, when he seems to have been in financial difficulties and paying off a bankruptcy. This seems to have been a family problem, in that in 1884, a William Orton was shown as a bankrupt victualler at Streets Houses, Castle Gresley.

Nevertheless, by 1884 Frederick William Orton was the licensed victualler at the Marquis of Granby, Regent Street (Brewers’ Journal p632).

In 1892, George Henry Rudkin was the victualler, followed by William Moore in 1894.

However, brewing would seem to have stopped around this period.
