Founded as a brew house attached to the Swan Hotel established by 1641.  
In 1818 Thomas Bokenham bought the Swan and made alterations, but in 1825 debts caused a sale of the brewery at the rear to William Crisp for £350. William Crisp rebuilt and ran it to his death in 1844.  


Acquired by George and Ernest Adnams of Newbury, Berkshire in about 1872. Registered March 1890. The Loftus family joined the company in 1902.
On 21st November 1872 5qtr Sole Bay Brewery and inn, owners retiring, sold privately and taken by George & Ernest Michael Adnams from Newbury. See [[Adnams & Son (Newbury)]]. Registered March 1890.
