In 1935, consequent on the closure of Manning & Co. Ltd, Falkner who had been their head brewer for twelve years converted a former shoe factory into a brewery. This was to produce sweet stout, which was a favourite drink in the town. However, the business proved unsuccessful and Falkner was bankrupt soon afterwards.
