From Brewery History Number 91

Founded on the 15th July 1982 by landlord Paul Hunt with a purpose built brewery, in a purpose built building, Down Royal was Ireland's first brew pub.

Paul also owned the Newtownards Malting Co which also supplied malt for the Hilden Brewing Co.
